Sailing Instructions

Start/Finish
The Start/Finish line(s) will be between an orange flag buoy and the Race Committee boat, except for Race #4 in which the Finish line may be between an orange flag buoy and the Race Committee on the Balboa Pier.

Races will be started in accordance with racing Rule 26.1, System 2, with classes starting at five (5) minute intervals.  All yachts shall sail by the Race Committee boat to be recognized prior to the Warning Signal.  Yachts whose preparatory signal has not been made must keep clear of yachts racing.

The order of starts will be Reverse EXCEPT for Race #5 & #6 at which time the order of starts will be PHRF A, PHRF B.

Courses
Courses for the Bogart Series are shown on the Voyagers Yacht Club Coarse Chart.  Course Charts will be available at the Committee boat prior to the warning signal.  The Course will be designated on the Committee boat between each class's preparatory signal and the start of the race.  When Code Flag "T", twice around, is displayed a yacht completes each lap by crossing the finish line from the direction of the last mark.

Recall
Individual recalls will be signaled in accordance with Racing Rule 29.2.  A General recall will be signaled in accordance with Racing Rule 29.3.

Time Limit
Unless stated otherwise, the time limit will be sundown.

Protests
A yacht shall notify the finish line Race Committee of the intention to protest, identify the protested yacht, and shall have met the requirements of Racing Rule 61.  Decisions of the Protest Committee will be final as to the award of trophies and prizes.

Protest hearings for the first, fifth, sixth and seventh races will be held after the race in approximately the order of receipt.  Protests shall be submitted to the Race Committee within one hour after the Race Committee arrives at the Post Race Party location.

Protest hearings for the second, third and fourth race will be held on the first Thursday following the race at 7:00 P.M. at a pre-arranged location.  Protests shall be submitted to the Race Committee by 5"00 P.M. on the first Monday following the race via FAX or delivery to Fred Masino.

Scoring
The Low Point Averaged Scoring System, Appendix AA of the racing rules, will apply, with seven races scheduled, of which five shall be completed to constitute a series.  Scoring for the Humphrey Bogart Perpetual Trophy will be awarded to the boat with the least total points.

A DNF is awarded points appropriate to the last place boat in the class if all boats were to finish for the given race.  A DNC is equal to a DNF plus one and a DSQ is equal to a DNF plus two.  A DSQ must be used to calculate the series.  The race may be thrown out but not the penalty points.

Trophies
Individual trophies will be awarded for each class.  Trophies will be awarded after races held on February 3rd, July 7th, and August 18th, at the Post Race Party.  The Humphrey Bogart Perpetual Trophy will be inscribed with the winner's name and presented at the Voyagers Yacht Club annual Commodores Ball.  The perpetual trophy will remain in the Voyagers Yacht Club Trophy Case.

Rules
The race series shall be governed by The Racing Rules of Sailing 1997 - 2000 including U.S. Sailing Prescriptions and by these Sailing Instructions.

Spinnakers are prohibited in the harbor and entrance channel.  An imaginary line between the end of the channel jetties defines the entrance channel.  Yachts that retire from a race shall notify the Race Committee by the time limit specified for the race via VHF radio or by disqualified for that race and/or the balance of the series.

Radio Communications
All boats should be capable of receiving and transmitting on marine VHF radio.  The Race Committee will attempt to monitor on VHF Channel 68.

Change in Sailing Instructions
The Race Committee will give, by loud hailer or in writing, changes in the Sailing Instructions.  Any posted change will remain in effect throughout the series.
